UNIHAND hand warmers for golf
Your first tee shot on a cold morning comes out of stiff fingers, and every shot after it waits on the same hands. A warmer in the pocket between strokes gives your grip back some of the feel the cold took.
Cold fingers on a cold grip
Golf in late autumn is a game of short bursts. You stand on the tee, walk, wait for the group ahead, then swing for a second or two. Your hands do the precise work, and they spend the rest of the round closed around cold rubber or tucked away.
A warmer earns its place in those waits. You slip a hand into your pocket on the walk to the ball, wrap it around the unit, and take it out warm when you pull a club. The heat is in your palm and fingers at the moment you need feel.
Where the pair rides on a round
At about 0.15 lb and under an inch thick, each unit sits in the front pocket of golf pants without pulling them down or getting in the way of your turn. Carry one on each side and both hands get their turn. Zip or button the pocket if your pants have one, so the warmer stays put when you bend to tee up.
Gloves help, but you can only wear so much on the hands that hold the club. With a glove on one hand, the other is bare to the wind. Give the bare hand more pocket time, and warm the gloved one between holes. Keep the glove dry too. The National Weather Service tells anyone out in the cold to keep their skin dry, and a damp glove makes that hard.
On a cart, the pocket on your jacket works just as well. Leave the warmer in the pocket, not loose on the seat, where it can slide off on the first slope.
Two units for you and your partner
The pair comes as two separate warmers, which suits a twosome. Keep one and pass the other across the cart. Each runs on its own battery and button, so your partner can set a level without asking you.
On a raw back nine, take both back. Set them back to back and you have one round warmer, hot on every side, to hold in both hands between shots. Split them again on the next tee. A cart blocks little of the wind, so keep the units in a closed pocket while you ride rather than loose in your hand.
Keep the golf balls out of it
Warm your hands, not your ball. Rule 4.2a of the Rules of Golf, published by The R&A, says you must not make a stroke at a ball whose performance has been deliberately altered. Heating the ball is one of the examples it names. The penalty for doing so is disqualification.
So give the warmer a pocket of its own. Keep spare balls in the bag or a different pocket, and you never have to wonder what a referee would say.
A level for eighteen holes
For most cold rounds, Medium is the level to start on. It holds 104-118.5 °F, warm enough to bring back feel in a minute or two, with an up-to figure of 14 hours on one unit. Low suits a mild day or the warmer you keep in reserve. Charge both units indoors the night before, so each one starts the round with a full battery.
Save High for the worst stretch, a cart ride into the wind or a long wait on a crowded par three. If the round runs long or the wind picks up on the back nine, switch the reserve unit on and let the first one rest in your bag. Questions
UNIHAND hand warmers for golf: questions
Can you use a UNIHAND warmer inside your golf glove?
Keep it in your pocket instead. Inside a glove the warmer presses against bare skin with nothing between, and a cold hand is a poor judge of heat. Warm the hand in your pocket, then put the glove back on dry.
Is it against the Rules of Golf to warm your ball with a UNIHAND warmer?
Yes. Rule 4.2a says you must not play a ball whose performance was deliberately altered, and it gives heating the ball as an example. The penalty is disqualification, so keep balls in a separate pocket.
Which UNIHAND level should you use for a cold round of golf?
Start on Medium, 104-118.5 °F, for a cold round, and drop to Low on milder days. Keep High for the coldest holes. Each level shows as one, two or three red lights beside the orange button.
Will a UNIHAND warmer fit in your golf pants pocket?
Yes. Each unit is 3.46 inches long, 1.84 wide and 0.79 thick, at about 0.15 lb, so it slips into the front pocket of golf pants with room to spare. Our own photos show one going into the front pocket of a pair of jeans.
